Last November, AIS held a continuing-education workshop for SLPs to explore the meaning and practical applications of holistic stuttering therapy. We were delighted with the enthusiasm, engagement, and passion that the group brought to us as we dived into beneficial ways to support the stuttering community. Check out a review of the workshop written by SLP Rachel Cortese!

As a dedicated Speech-Language Pathologist and board member of The American
Institute for Stuttering (AIS), I recently had the privilege of attending an exceptional two-
day workshop focusing on holistic stuttering treatment strategies. For those looking to
deepen their expertise in this vital area, participating in this CEU course is a fantastic
opportunity.

Holistic Approach to Stuttering

The workshop provided an in-depth exploration of holistic treatment techniques that
prioritize the whole person rather than just the speech impairment. It is especially
beneficial for clinicians who already have a foundational knowledge of stuttering but are
eager to expand their skill set. Engaging with fellow SLPs who share similar challenges
and insights fosters a collaborative environment, allowing for rich discussions and
shared learning experiences.

Hands-On Learning

One of the highlights of the workshop was the focus on practical application.
Participants not only learned advanced concepts but also engaged in collaborative
analysis and problem-solving through simulated case studies. This experiential learning
approach is invaluable, as it enables clinicians to practice new strategies and refine
their clinical decision-making skills in real-time, enhancing their confidence and
effectiveness in therapy sessions.

Key Techniques and Strategies

Participants delved into various holistic techniques, including Motivational Interviewing,
avoidance reduction methods, parent-child interaction strategies, and cognitive-
behavioral therapy. These tools are designed to create individualized therapy plans
tailored to each client's unique needs, maximizing therapeutic impact. The structured
layout of the workshop—focusing on preschoolers and school-aged children on day one
and extending to teens and adults on day two—ensured that attendees could hone their
skills across age groups.

Immediate Application in Practice

The beauty of attending a CEU workshop like this is the immediate applicability of the
techniques learned. Clinicians left empowered, equipped with fresh insights and
actionable strategies that they could implement in their practices right away. This
seamless transition from theory to practice is essential in our field, where timely and
effective interventions can make a significant difference in the lives of those who stutter.

Conclusion

For Speech Language Pathologists seeking to enhance their capability in stuttering
treatment, attending a CEU workshop offered by The American Institute for Stuttering is
an unparalleled investment in professional growth. Not only does it elevate clinical skills,
but it also fosters a supportive community of practitioners committed to improving
outcomes for clients who stutter. I encourage all SLPs with a foundational
understanding of stuttering to register for the next workshop and take a step toward
becoming leaders in holistic stuttering treatment. Together, we can make a meaningful
impact in the lives of those we serve.
