Our practice group’s stuttering poetry

By Carl, 1:02 pm

writing

Last night at our weekly support/practice group, three people attended. As it was a smaller group, I decided to spend some time on something creative. They were asked to write a poem about stuttering. Here’s what Kendra, Roisin and Nick wrote.

For me to stutter
Is to make myself so clear
as I ought to be.

There once was a kid who stuttered,
He really liked bread and butter,
he was very tall,
and lived in a mall,
Oh, the silly life of that boy who stuttered!

The 2009 ASHA Convention was held last week in New Orleans. Chamonix and Carl went down to The Big Easy to meet with colleagues and share their expert knowledge of stuttering therapy through their presentations.

Here’s a little video of them saying hi from ASHA. Coming soon, we’ll post info on both what they taught and what they learned during the convention.

When you stutter and speaking is your job: Alan Tonelson

By Chamonix, 6:47 pm

alan-tonelson2Alan Tonelson is an inspiration for those who stutter. He proves that being someone who stutters doesn’t have to dictate your career or the amount of communication required on the job.

Alan is a Research Fellow at the U.S. Business and Industry Council. His job duties include making many broadcast media appearances and giving speeches to various groups, including high school and college classes, business groups, government agencies, and Congressional committees.  He does extensive work over the phone. He is also the author of The Race to the Bottom.

Alan worked with our director, Catherine Montgomery, back in 1979 and has done extensive work on his speech.  Catherine and I recently worked with Alan in July during a refresher weekend.

Here is Alan engaged in a debate on CNBC’s Street Signs.
